Spinalonga was not always an island. Venetian engineers cut the rocky headland of Kalydon away from the shore of Elounda late in the sixteenth century, then raised a fortress on the ruins of an ancient acropolis. Construction began in 1579. The name is usually traced to a Venetian phrase for a long thorn, though older Greek charts keep the name Kalydon. Every Spinalonga boat trip from Elounda approaches the same seaward bastion, ochre and low above the Gulf of Mirabello, its platforms angled across a channel barely four hundred metres wide. The walls earned their reputation. Crete fell to the Ottomans in 1669, yet the fortress held for another forty-six years and surrendered only by treaty in 1715. Ottoman families afterwards settled inside the ramparts and traded salt and grain across the bay. In 1903 the Cretan State turned the island into a leper colony. It functioned as one until 1957, the last settlement of its kind in Europe. Its residents built a street of shops, a laundry, a hospital and a chapel dedicated to Agios Panteleimon, and supply boats reached them daily from Plaka, four hundred metres off. What survives is unusually legible. A single vaulted passage, known to guides as Dante's Gate, pierces the Venetian curtain and opens directly onto that street. Roofless houses climb the slope behind it; cisterns cut into bedrock still hold winter rain; the half-moon battery faces Plaka across the channel. Conservation teams have since stabilised the ramparts, the cistern network and the fever hospital. A conservation fee of 20 EUR per person covers entrance to the archaeological site, which opens daily from 08:00 to 20:00.
